In this blog, I intend to provide an insight into a little of what I and the rest of my colleagues in County Hall do; how we are trying to make Essex a better place to live and work, how we are trying to improve the services we offer to you and how we are attempting to promote Essex locally, nationally and internationally.

Hopefully these pages will become a forum for discussion and debate around many of the issues and challenges facing our county, so I would like to encourage you to share with me your comments and opinions. For my part I will try to keep my posts interesting and informative, and I will be paying attention to what is posted.

More Essex success

Just last week I congratulated our A-level students here in Essex for their excellent results. This week I’m pleased to extend those congratulations to the GCSE students in Essex who have just received their record-breaking results – and I’m sure all of you would join me in thanking your teachers and parents for all of their hard work too.

It’s been an exceptionally busy couple of weeks for me as we approach the government deadline to submit proposals for local enterprise partnerships - the government's proposed vehicle for driving economic growth and investment. There has been much speculation in the press about local government all over the UK developing their proposals and we have been in discussion with all the local authorities in Essex and neighbouring areas to ensure we get the best deal possible for you. I shall keep you updated here as soon as there is more to announce on this topic.

In the meantime, I have been reminded by today’s release of new tourism figures (which show a 5% increase in visits to UK attractions) to mention our VisitEssex website, which you can access by clicking that link. Our tourism team works hard to keep this up to date with all sorts of things to do in Essex to make the most of the remaining summertime…if we get any more sunshine!

Peter
